Changes to Fire Safety Law in the UK during 2006
Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order effective 1st October 2006.
This order was introduced effectively to abolish the fire certificates that were previously issued by your local authority, and to merge many work and safety acts together including the Fire Precautions Act 1971 and the Fire Precautions (workplace) Regulation 1997.
It is now the responsibility of the employer to ensure that this is adhered to. This involves making sure there is adequate fire fighting equipment (extinguishers), that these are maintained at least annually and there is appropriate safety signs throughout the premises.
Failing to comply with this order can result in a heavy fine and up to 2 years imprisonment.
